DESCRIPTION

AgFirst Nelson is a horticultural consultancy company based in Motueka, providing high-quality technical advice and solutions to the horticulture sector. We run an independent laboratory and we will require several casual staff to collect samples from the orchard from mid February through to May. Our business operates 7 days a week, we usually roster people for 5 and a half/6 working days per week. Our busiest period is mid-March till end of April, therefore you need to be available to work through Easter & Anzac – public holidays are paid according to Holiday Act 2003.

The applicants who can complete the entire season with us will be preferred. 

Whether you want to gain some laboratory experience, learn a little more about the kiwifruit season, be part of a team or earn some money this role ticks all the boxes. This is a great role that will suit a range of candidates, no experience required, full training will be provided.

 THE ROLE & DUTIES

Seasonal Kiwi Laboratory Technicians/Collectors carry out routine kiwifruit collection and testing on samples on behalf of our clients to assess fruit quality.

This role is for a harvest period with seasonal work starting February ramping up in March and running through to May, working variable hours per week. Duties will include driving to orchards and collecting kiwifruit (on foot) as required for each sample, and then driving the collected samples to the nearest drop off point. Fruit is then processed in the kiwifruit lab.

Hours will be rostered to meet the requirements of the business which operates 7 days a week - we work even when the weather is not in our favor. You will be required to be available to work a minimum of 5.5 days per week. Samplers may work alone or in pairs and will be well supported by our Senior Team Members.

START DATES:

  • Intake 1: approx. Monday 12th February - 2 dual positions (collector & lab technician role combined) and 2 laboratory technicians 
  • Intake 2: approx. 4th March - 2 dual positions (collector & lab technician roles combined), 2 lab technicians
  • Intake 3: approx. 11th March - 2 dual positions (collector & lab technician role combined) and 2 lab technicians.

*Dual positions: collectors start their day in the field collecting samples and they finish their day processing the fruit samples in the kiwi lab. Lab Technicians process the fruit all day.

 

ABOUT YOU

  • Good map reading skills (collectors’ roles)
  • Ability to work within set timeframes
  • Be flexible with hours of work, recognising that this work is seasonal and has peaks and troughs throughout the season
  • Ability to use phone and software apps and have a reasonable standard of computer literacy
  • Self-disciplined with a proven ability to follow set procedures and take the initiative when necessary
  • Clean driving history, FULL Class 1 drivers license (or valid overseas drivers license) for the DUAL positions (collector & lab tech)
  • An ability to work unsupervised & to be self-motivated
  • Maintain professionalism and respect confidentiality
  • Team player, able to create a good working relationship with other staff in the team and across the company
  • Dual role candidates are expected to have a good level of fitness, you will walk up to 16km per day and collect kiwifruit samples weighing 12-16kg from under pergola structures 1.7-1.8m tall. You must be able to repetitively cut fruit samples using a sharp knife.
