AgFirst Nelson is a horticultural consultancy company based in Motueka, providing high-quality technical advice and solutions to the horticulture sector. We run an independent laboratory and we will require 1 casual collector  to join our team. Our business operates 7 days a week, we usually roster people for 5 and a half/6 working days per week. Our busiest period is mid-March till end of April, therefore you need to be available to work through Easter & Anzac – public holidays are paid according to Holiday Act 2003.

The applicant who can complete the entire season with us will be preferred (must have valid visa until 11/05/2024).  Due to the nature of the work involved, your height  must be below 180cm.  

Whether you want to gain some laboratory experience, learn a little more about the kiwifruit season, be part of a team or earn some money, this role ticks all the boxes.  No experience required, full training will be provided.

THE ROLE & DUTIES

Seasonal Kiwi Laboratory Collectors carry out routine kiwifruit collection and testing on samples on behalf of our clients to assess fruit quality.

Collector duties: include driving to orchards and collecting kiwifruit (on foot) as required for each sample, and then driving the collected samples to the nearest drop off point. Fruit is then processed in the kiwifruit lab.

Hours will be rostered to meet the requirements of the business which operates 7 days a week - we work even when the weather is not in our favor. You will be required to be available to work a minimum of 5.5 days per week. Samplers may work alone or in pairs and will be well supported by our Senior Team Members.

 

ABOUT YOU

  • Good map reading skills
  • Ability to work within set timeframes
  • Be flexible with hours of work, recognising that this work is seasonal and has peaks and troughs throughout the season
  • Ability to use phone and software apps and have a reasonable standard of computer literacy
  • Self-disciplined with a proven ability to follow set procedures and take the initiative when necessary
  • Experienced driver, clean driving history FULL Class 1 drivers license (or valid overseas drivers license)
  • An ability to work unsupervised & to be self-motivated
  • Maintain professionalism and respect confidentiality
  • Team player, able to create a good working relationship with other staff in the team and across the company
  • Good level of fitness, collectors will walk up to 16km per day and collect kiwifruit samples weighing 12-16kg from under pergola structures 1.7-1.8m tall. You must be able to repetitively cut fruit samples using a sharp knife.
