Where: Sunny Hawkes Bay on an orchard conveniently located between Napier and Hastings, 5 minutes from Taradale.

The orchard: Kilhaven is a family operated orchard with 50 hectares of apples and pears run by brothers Philip and Stuart. For more info see our Facebook page The orchard is part of the Mt Erin Group of growers who take pride in selling premium quality apples around the world.

The job description: Work is available for apple thinning from November which involves removing fruitlets by hand from trees to reach a specified number and distribution on each tree. This task is important to achieve good colour and apple size. Picking work is available from February and requires workers to carefully select and pick fruit at the optimum maturity with fruit from each tree harvested multiple times over the course of two weeks. Workers will be trained in all aspects of the tasks so no experience is necessary. Work can be demanding working at heights either on ladders or platforms and during picking generally requires workers to fill and carry bags filled with harvested fruit.

The perks: Although physically demanding some work will be done on a self-driving platform taking away the need for ladders and picking bags. Apple thinning work is available up until Xmas with picking work possible from February to the end of April. Or for someone that feels orchard work suits them after the apple harvest a permanent job involving all aspects of the orchard is a possibility.

The person: We are looking for anyone wanting an outdoor experience over summer while they search for new horizons or someone looking for a taste of an orchard career to see if it is for them. The work can be physically demanding shifting ladders, working at heights on ladders, carrying bags full of apples and in the heat of the day so workers must be physically able.

Work requirements: Valid visa, NZ bank account and IRD number.

Rates and hours: Minimum of $23.80 Incl Holiday Pay per hour with work often paying more depending on the task and worker efficiency. Generally, 5 days a week up until Xmas with some weekend work possible and 6 days a week for picking. Weekly hours can sometimes be dependent on weather and fruit readiness.

Accommodation is available on-site at a reasonable rate for those that need it.
